Children’s Health

School is around the corner, let’s set our children up for success with appropriate equipment and exercise guidance so they can flourish!

Why focus on Children's Health?

We’ve just had the first fully open Summer in 2 years and school is on the horizon for our children again so now is a great time to take stock of your children’s activity levels and needs for the school year ahead.

Whether they need special equipment, more sport, exercise, or other support to make their lives easier,  we hope to provide the information you need to handle any queries or issues that may arise, and if not, you know when it’s time to contact your local Chartered Physiotherapist for support!

How is Physiotherapy given to Children?

Treatment given by the physiotherapist is based on an accurate assessment of the child, followed by an individual treatment programme. This treatment programme includes explanation and instruction as appropriate to the child, the parents and those responsible for the child’s development.

Paediatric practice takes into account the fact that the child is not a small adult but a developing human being.

What can a Paediatric Physiotherapist do?

Paediatric physiotherapy is the treatment and care of babies, children and young people from birth to 18 years. Paediatric physiotherapists have specialist training, skills and knowledge of child development and of childhood conditions.
Common conditions include:

  • Neonatal conditions
  • Developmental delay
  • Dyspraxia / Developmental Co-ordination Disorder
  • Complex physical disability
  • Torticollis / plagiocephaly
  • Acute or Chronic Respiratory disease
  • Musculoskeletal – flat foot, knock knees, in-toeing, out-toeing, toe walking
  • Hypermobility

What can I do?

As a parent, you have a huge influence on the health of your child or children. Keeping in tune with their activity levels and acting accordingly is a great place to start. If your child is taking part in sports 5/6 times per week, pay extra attention to how they feel and describe their physical wellness. If they’re not very active, try encouraging them to get active or bring them with you on your own activities!

Secondary to this is the equipment you provide your children with; their choice of footwear and even their school bag can substantially decrease or increase the strain put on them. Check our resources below and our social posts for guidance in those areas!
